10 Great Stress – Busters (+ One Bonus)

10 Great Stress – Busters (+ One Bonus)

Stress has become a part and parcel of our daily life. Be it the office-goer, the housewife, the student, or anybody else from any other strata of society. Everyone experiences stress, sometime or the other. Some of us are able to manage it, many of us can’t. Stress is a silent killer. If not handled well, the consequences could be tragic. Therefore, we should be prepared to face it, fight it, and flush it out of our life. Below are 10 great stress – busters.

1.     Read the Scriptures

A page a day should be enough. Read the Holy Koran, the Holy Bible, the Bhagwad Gita. Or for that matter any holy text. As you get attuned to doing this daily, you’ll undergo a nirvanic experience. Your heart, mind and soul will feel light and buoyant.

2.     Hug

Jaadu ki jhappi. Magical hug. When you hug, you release stress immediately. Positive energy begins to flow through your body. So, make a habit of hugging your family members (parents, spouse, children), friends and acquaintances. A hug removes stress from both the parties involved – the one who hugs, and the one who gets hugged.

3.     Laugh

Laughter is the perfect remedy for stress. Watch a comedy film (the Govinda-kinds 😊), a funny TV show, read something hilarious (silly jokes – the Santa / Banta ones are the best) or get together with people who love a hearty laugh and have a jolly good time.

4.     Share / Discuss / Talk

We all have at least one person in our life with whom we can share everything without any restriction. Talk to that person. There maybe something worrying you, something that must be pinching you from within. Spell it out. Once you get this out of your system, you will feel liberated. But discuss only with that one special person – not with anyone else. And if you don’t have anyone that special, that close to you, then stand in front of the mirror and speak it out.

5.     Dance

You don’t have to be a dancer to dance. Just put on some music and let yourself loose. Twist, turn, shake, wiggle. The weirder your steps, the freer you’ll feel. Do it for 5 minutes only and see the difference in you. Those who are hesitant to dance for whatever reasons, can ramp-walk. It will have the same effect on reducing stress.

6.     Visualize

Set your imagination free. Think the best thoughts you can think. All of us have some inner desires which we know can never be fulfilled in reality – VISUALIZE those desires. Let your mind become the screen and on it watch your favourite movie (your inner desires) unfold.

7.     Meditate

You don’t need to sit in the classical meditative pose. But if you have space and privacy, then by all means do it. Otherwise, just sit on a chair, or wherever you can, and shut your eyes and let your mind go blank. Slowly ease out all the thoughts from it. Don’t let any thought get in – you may encounter difficulty initially, but as you get used to it, you’ll be able to do it effortlessly. Focus on nothingness.

8.     Play (with children)

Whatever your age maybe, playing with children will make you feel like a child. Relive your childhood   and your happy days will overwhelm you. The younger the children are, the more you’ll enjoy. And if you can play with a baby, then that’s heaven. But if you don’t have anyone so small in your vicinity, play with the teenagers – any indoor / outdoor games will do.

9.     Connect (with nature)

WH Davies said

‘What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare?

So, find that time. Look at nature – the trees, the birds, the sunrise, the sunset. We have time to do silly things but for such things, we always have an excuse. Connecting with nature will reduce our stress in a big way. Nature heals, so benefit from it.

10.  Concentrate on Yourself

One of the major causes for stress is that we stop focusing on ourselves. In the demanding world that we are living in, our time gets spent on fulfilling the requirement of others (boss, office, spouse, children, family, society, etc). Redirect the spotlight on yourself. Give yourself time.
