Q & A on God

Q1.  Does God exist?

A1. Depending on your belief, God either exists or not.

Q2. If God exists why is there so much sorrow?

A2. If doctor exists why is there so much sickness? If teacher exists why is there so much illiteracy? If wealthy people exist why is there so much poverty?

Q3. If God is one, why is there so many religions?

A3. We have one body. so why different clothes? We have one stomach, so why different foods?

Q4. If God is just, then why is there inequality in the world?

A4. Take the example of cricket. Or any other sports. Two nations play and only one wins though prayers are offered by fans of both the sides. God doesn’t intervene in such matters because he is just – the team that plays the best on a particular day, wins. So, sometimes a Christian nation wins, sometimes an Islamic nation, and sometimes a Hindu nation.

Q5. Does everything happen due to the will of God?

A5. No, it happens due to free will He has given to everyone.

Q6. If that’s the case, then people are free to exercise their free will?

A6. Yes.

Q7. So, when a person commits a sin or a crime, he does so due to his free will, then why is he punished?

A7. The law of the land punishes, not God.

Q8. But after death, he will be punished?

A8. How do you know after death he will punished?

Q9. It’s in the holy books – it is clearly mentioned that those who commit sin will go to hell.

A9. Well, then don’t commit sins.

Q10. But what about the free will?

A10. Free will is to be applied sensibly.

Q11. So, God tells us to exercise free will and then He only punishes us if it is exercised.

A11. Don’t we punish our children if they do something wrong? Don’t we tell them ‘you should not do this?’ –  Why do we do that? The children are free to do whatever they like but we keep telling them ‘don’t watch too much TV’ or ‘don’t lie’ – and if they don’t listen, then we admonish them. So, God has given the freedom to exercise free will but if not used correctly, there has to be some penalty.

Q12. Why is God so confusing?

A12. He is not. Our minds are.

Q13. How can something or someone exist without being seen?

A13. Why not? Air keeps us alive – it is such an essential requirement for life, yet it cannot be seen. Likewise, gravity, ultra-violet rays, the mind, thoughts/imagination, electricity/Wi-Fi – all these exist without being seen, then why not God?

Q14. Why don’t great scientists and philosophers believe in God?

A14. They are men of logic. They demand evidence.

Q15. So, if there is no evidence, it means there Is no God?

A15. Why should we conclude in this way? These men of logic have still not been able to get the evidences they want to get convinced. This does not mean that there is no God.  The problem is theirs. They are unable to find the proof. Did gravity not exist before Newton discovered it? Did buoyancy not exist before Archimedes discovered it? Did the theory of relativity not exist before Einstein discovered it? Did America not exist before Columbus discovered it? They did but the world came to know only when these men discovered them.

  3. Nasir, you have addressed this profound matter very well. Hat’s off! My two bits comes from a famous quote by a wise man: Man and God met somewhere. Both exclaimed ‘My Creator!’
