Handling Depression
Do
not confuse sadness with depression. Being sad is normal; it is just a passing
phase. But if sadness persists and you start feeling helpless and hopeless to
stop it, then that is depression.
When
depressed, you lose interest in everything. Activities that you enjoyed mean
nothing to you. You feel lonely and neglected. You start disliking everything.
During
bouts of depression, do not panic. Do the following when you are in the dumps
and thinking that you cannot come out of it:
ü Go for a walk – for the first few days you will have to force
yourself, but after that, you’ll get used to it. Walking is the best medicine.
Do not underestimate its effects.
ü Watch a comedy show or read a book of humour – laughter will make
you feel good. Do this twice a day, if not, then at least once, for 30 to 45
minutes. You’ll see your mood lifting.
ü Do something for the underprivileged – when you’ll see their
situation, you’ll realise that you are so privileged. That shock will force you
to come out of your shell.
ü Eat ice-cream or falooda – don’t gorge yourself but allow yourself
small portions every now and then. The blueness in you will disappear quickly.
ü Play with children - you can never be depressed if you make a
habit to play with children every day, whatever your age.
ü Imagine – let your mind wander. Experience vicariously what you
cannot in reality.
ü Spend time in solitude – be away from everybody. Just give time to
yourself. Reflect.
ü Keep a pet – cat, dog, fish, bird or whatever creature you like.
Having a pet gives you additional comfort.
ü Watch the England – New Zealand cricket 2019 world cup final – the
excitement will free you from depression.
ü Dress up and ramp walk – find some time to do this, when you are
alone. Women can do when their husbands are at work and children at school. Men
can do it when their wives are out shopping.
ü Praise someone – say something good and positive to at least one person
every day. When you do this, you’ll see the person smiling or blushing, this
will have a corresponding effect on you.
ü Listen to Kishore-da, Rafi-saab, Lata-ji – they’ll provide instant
relief! You won’t need anything once you listen to these golden voices.
ü Write to me – I am the best anti-depressant you’ll ever have (that
too without any side effects). If all above fails, this should be the final
resort. And do keep reading my blogs, I guarantee something different every day.
