No One Reads my Blog

The other day a fellow blogger said to me, ‘No one reads my blogs.’

I said, ‘Why should anyone read your blogs?’

He looked at me quizzically and said, ‘But what’s the point in writing if no one reads?’

‘Precisely,’ I said. ‘So, stop writing.’

‘But I love writing,’ he said.

‘Then keep writing,’ I told him.

‘I don’t understand you,’ he said. ‘One time you are saying stop writing and the other time you are saying keep writing.’

I said: ‘If you are passionate about writing - almost to the point of obsession - then nothing can stop you from writing (certainly not those who don’t read your blogs) but if your sole aim is for others to read then you can’t sustain for long because you don’t have control over people. It’s for them to decide whether they want to read your blog or not.’

There are many budding writers who want to become an overnight sensation. They don’t understand that writing is not a joke. It’s the most thankless job, the most unrewarding activity. Only the strong-willed, the most passionate can last in this profession. But, it’s not only about writing. People have stopped reading. They prefer engaging themselves in other activities than sitting with a book in their hands.

Leave aside a book. People neither have the time nor the inclination to read even short articles. Therefore, writing has become an even more arduous task. To hold the reader’s attention even for a brief span of time is a challenge, but more than that, the bigger challenge is to get the reader to click on the link you send them.

No wonder, my fellow blogger has stopped writing. I trudge on oblivious to the number of views my page has had because I am like that brave soldier who keeps fighting despite all odds.

  2. Nasir, you are spot on! As a writer I have realized that the journey itself is the reward. The journey is the destination I am seeking. I am sad that the writing part of my second book is getting over after three years. What will I do now, till another idea comes to my mind!
