Ready, Steady, Go!

For all those who are unaware of how to climb the corporate ladder of success, just reach out for this book and see the difference it makes in your career. Authored by Deepak Mehra, a senior executive in a regional bank in the UAE, Ready, Steady, Go is a fine book on fast-tracking your professional life.

Deepak is an investment wizard and his views and comments on the financial market is followed closely by investors. He regularly appears on Bloomberg TV. He is an IIT (BHU) graduate and has obtained his management degree from IMT -Ghaziabad. Yet, none of these are his main achievements. As a gentleman, he scores the highest. He is soft-spoken, kind, and a great motivator. I know him personally and hence can vouch for all these attributes.

Coming back to his book, Deepak has listed down 59 essential steps / points, which if meticulously followed can make a sagging career leapfrog into a flourishing one. He is thorough and precise with every point; some of them are:

Be Sociable, not Social

Passion is out of Fashion

Think like a Golfer

The book is divided into three sections. The first section Ready deals with tips on dress codes, importance of a clean desk, body language and managing the Line Manager.

The second section Steady deals with how to make continuous progress, level by level, with the right moves and actions. He tells why personal and professional lives should be kept apart. And most importantly, why only working hard is not enough, but to make the superiors aware that you are working hard.

Go, the final section, describes how a mid-management level manager can break into the upper management level. Deepak smartly explains how critical it is to be known to those who matter and how lonely it gets as you climb the corporate ladder and how to handle that loneliness.

The book is a must-read for those who are beginning their careers but will also benefit those who are struggling with their careers. I would give it a 4-star rating. Deepak has finished his second book and is now hunting for ideas for his third.
