Silence

Silence is divine. But no one seems to understand this. Every festival that we celebrate is loud. There seems to be a competition to outdo each other. We go out of our way to create as much noise as possible. As it is there is enough noise pollution in our country but we have turned a deaf ear to it. In fact, so deaf we have become, that we don’t hear the noise that we ourselves make.

From every corner of the country loudspeakers will blare out music, sermons, speeches, and god know what more. Do we think that the God we believe in is deaf? That we have to make a ruckus for Him to hear us. What point are we trying to prove? That we are very God-minded and devout. Is it necessary for us to display our religious fervour publicly?

Isn’t religion a very personal thing? If yes, then shouldn’t all rituals and ceremonies be performed either at home or in respective places of worship with the minimum sound possible? But we all spill on to the streets. We, Indians, have a penchant for processions. Without realising the chaos that we are creating, we will divert traffic, stop it for hours, and make a boisterous show of our religiosity.

I think it is time for us to change ourselves. Our faith and belief are not dependent on the procession that we take out or loud noise that we make. God would love us more if we worshipped him silently. He is in our hearts. He listens to us without we speaking a word because He is aware of our desires and what’s running in our minds.

If we all pledge to stop the use of loudspeakers and not to take out processions, the percentage of noise pollution in our nation will drop to bearable levels. Already there’s a WHO report that says over 1 billion risk permanent hearing loss from loud sounds. Unnecessary cacophonic sounds are playing havoc with our minds. Silence holds the key to our sanity.

Silence is enlightening and illuminating and thus can bring people of different faiths closer to each other. We can become more effective as a nation if we embrace silence. Also, God will be relieved,  because I am sure even He must be fed-up with the sound that we are making to impress Him.
