10 Bollywood Marriages that Fate Didn’t Allow
Bollywood is famous for marriages, affairs, scandals and break-ups. But
it is also well known for marriages that just didn’t happen. Here is a list of
10 such relationships, in which Fate the villain, didn’t allow the relationship
to culminate in marriage. The reasons are several; the Hindu-Muslim
factor, the presence of the ‘other’ lover, the family background, one of
the partners being already married, ego, etc, etc.
1. Dilip
Kumar-Madhubala: They were madly in love, engaged, and all set to marry but an
incident changed all this. While shooting for BR Chopra’s Naya Daur (later on
Vyjanthimala did the movie), Madhubala’s father refused to allow his daughter
to shoot because the area where the shooting was taking place was infested with
dacoits. He requested for the venue to be changed. BR Chopra refused and asked
Dilip Kumar to intervene. Some argument happened between Dilip saab and
Madhubala’s father. Dilip Kumar told Madhubala to leave films and marry him.
She said he should apologize to her father first. Dilip Kumar never did that
and the rest as they say is history.
2. Dev
Anand-Suraiya: The famous Hindu-Muslim card was played in this relationship.
Suraiya’s family was strictly against her getting married to a Hindu man. They
pressurized her so much that she finally succumbed, though she remained
unmarried till the end.
3. Raj
Kapoor-Nargis: A love story straight out from a Bollywood movie. Raj was
already a married man when he got involved with Nargis but at no time he was
ready to divorce his first wife. Their marriage which seemed so likely, with
the passing of days became more and more unlikely. And ultimately it didn’t happen.
4. Jeetendra-Hema
Malini: At the eleventh hour this marriage had to be called off. Dharam-ji was
romancing Hema Malini but not willing to commit; frustrated Hema looked
elsewhere and found Jeetendra who was already in love with her; though
Jeetendra was supposed to convince her about Sanjeev Kumar’s love for her and
instead fell for her. Confused! Well, don’t be, after seeing Hindi movies, one
should be prepared for all kind of shocks. Sanjeev Kumar became an alcoholic,
Hema Malini finally gave in to Dharam’s charms and Jeetendra married Shobha,
his childhood sweetheart (kahani mein twist).
5. Rajendra
Kumar-Saira Banu: Despite Rajendra Kumar being much older and married, Saira
Banu was ready to settle down with him. When Naseem Banu, Saira’s mother got
whiff of their impending marriage, she exploited Saira’s crush on DK (everyone
had a crush on Dilip Kumar during those times) and directed her attention
towards him. Given a choice, any girl would have preferred Dilip over Rajendra
and Saira also did the same.
6. Shammi
Kapoor-Mumtaz: Shammi Kapoor proposed to Mumtaz when she was 18 and at that
age, she was more interested in making a career in Bollywood rather than
settling down with a well-known actor. Shammi Kapoor wanted her to quit films;
she didn’t. and the marriage didn’t take
place.
7. Sanjeev
Kumar-Sulakshana Pandit: Sulakshana Pandit was head over heels in love with
Sanjeev Kumar but Sanjeev’s infatuation with Hema was so intense that he
refused to marry Sulakshana Pandit even though his family members were ready to
accept her.
8. Shatrughan
Sinha-Reena Roy: Reena Roy’s past life was instrumental in their marriage not
taking place. Before joining films, she was a cabaret dancer and this fact
played heavily on Bihari babu’s mind and hence he distanced himself away from
Reena Roy when the talk of marriage began.
9. Mitthun
Chakraborty-Sridevi: Sridevi wanted Mitthun to divorce Yogita Bali but
Mitthun-da refused. Sri didn’t want to be the second wife so they parted ways.
Later on, though, she became the second wife of Boney Kapoor.
10. Abhishek
Bachchan-Karisma Kapoor: Battle of ego broke their engagement and one of the
most high-profile marriages could not take place.
