Owl
Of all the birds, the owl is the philosopher. Look at his eyes, his
piercing gaze, the way he moves his head. He hoots only when he has to make a
point; otherwise he dwells in the sea of silence. He is an acute listener.
Listening is a rare quality. We all love to talk and we come across many good
speakers in our life but there’s hardly someone whom we can say is a good
listener.
In the avian kingdom also, you find many good speakers but very few good
listeners. The cuckoo, the nightingale, the canary, the parrot, the mynah, they
are all good speakers. The owl is an
exception. Perched on the tree like a sage in meditation, he is all attention.
His specialized hearing ability makes him a master listener. It is therefore no
wonder the maxim ‘as wise as an owl’ exists. Truly he displays abundant wisdom
by talking less and listening more.
From a distance his appearance seems foreboding. But if you take a
closer look, he appears to be sagacious and erudite. Even though I am not an
ornithologist, I don’t think there is any other bird that can rival the owl in
having a scholarly appearance.
He is the Einstein of all birds.
