When Things Get Hotter, Be Cooler
I retreat into a self-made island within whenever I
need a quick break. Events keep on happening, crises keep on coming, the
phone-calls, the e-mails, they are never-ending; the demands of work, the
management of staff, the boss’s requirements, and amidst all this, a
colleague’s request, a customer’s complaint, and the chaos on your table that
needs your immediate attention.
If the quick break is not taken then you will burn
out; therefore, I force myself to retreat to that self-made island within,
where I find peace and solace. That few moments when I am there, alone, basking
in that splendid isolation, I feel rejuvenated and inspired to take head-on the
rest of the day.
To rephrase Shakespeare’s famous words ‘some are
born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them’:
some e-mails are to be answered immediately, some can be sat upon until the
next day, and some need not be answered at all. E-mails consume the maximum
time and if not handled effectively then you will be always behind schedule.
Whenever I find things getting hot, I try to be
cooler than my normal self. It helps to maintain the equilibrium. It is better
to give a centimetre than lose a metre.
